If you’re planning a trip to Ghana, you don’t want to do anything without first  checking whether you need a visa to enter the country. This is because you may ruin your travel plans and waste money if you get to the airport and your airline doesn’t allow you to get on board. Worse, you may be detained, fined, arrested or even deported if you don’t have a visa. So read on to find out if you need this document, as well as how to avoid costly mistakes regarding the visa requirements.

Do you really need a visa?

Sure, some countries don’t need a visa to come into Ghana. For instance, Kenya, South Africa, and Jamaica do not need a visa for short stays of up to 90 days. Members of ECOWAS also can enter visa-free. But generally, you need a visa if you’ll be welcomed into the country. So you have to do your research or visit a Ghanaian embassy close to you to be double-sure. And if you indeed need a visa, you’ll need the following to kickstart the process:

  • A completed application form.
  • A valid passport with at least six months’ validity beyond your departure date.
  • Two passport-sized photographs.
  • Proof of a return ticket or onward travel.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.

You should note that the visa process can take a while, so make it a point to apply very early so that you don’t get stuck last-minute.

What if you want a visa upon arrival?

This is a visa option, but you need a good reason before you get one. In other words, not anyone can apply for it. You may apply for a visa upon arrival if you need to be in Ghana for a very urgent situation, or you have an impromptu business trip or diplomatic mission. Again, visit a Ghanaian embassy close to you to see if you are eligible for this visa.

How to avoid costly mistakes when applying for a Ghanaian visa

If you’re not careful, you may not get your visa on time to travel as you planned. Worse, you may be denied one. So, you need to do the following:

  1. Update your knowledge of the current visa requirements for your country, since they can change at any time. The Ghanaian embassy and online resources can help you out.
  2. Make sure you apply for one very early, as you could be waiting for days or weeks to get it, depending on your country.
  3. Seek help from a trusted Ghanaian immigration lawyer and other experts who know all there is to know about Ghanaian visas.
