As a foreigner looking to stay in Ghana for an extended period, getting a resident permit is non-negotiable. Regardless of the reason for relocating to the country, it’s important to understand the requirements and follow the steps to ensure a straightforward and hassle-free process. Here’s your ultimate guide to securing your Ghana resident permit in 2025.
Understanding the types of Ghana resident permits
Before starting the application process, it’s important to understand what kind of resident permit you want so that you can prepare the necessary documents and understand the specific requirements. This way, you can avoid breaking the Ghanaian immigration laws and facing sanctions, which also include imprisonment and deportation. With that in mind, you can apply for one of the following:
- Temporary resident permit, which is issued for eight years or fewer. This means you need to extend your permit at the appointed time to avoid run-ins with the law.
- The permanent resident permit grants you the right to be in Ghana for as long as you wish. You must be in the country, despite its permanent nature,to ensure its validity. It’s also worth noting that your permanent resident permit could be automatically rescinded if you are out of the country for more than 12 months.

Knowing the required documents
You’ll need the following documents when applying for any type of Ghanaian resident permit:
- A valid passport with at least six months of validity and blank visa pages.
- Completed and signed resident permit application form.
- Official contract or admission letter for work or study permits.
- Evidence that you can sustain yourself in Ghana (e.g., bank statements and other proof of financial means).
- Health clearance documents (for some applications).
- A criminal record check from your home country or recent country of residence.
- Proof of residency showing your accommodation arrangements in Ghana.
These documents must be accurate and up-to-date, as failure to meet the requirements may result in delays or rejection.
Applying and paying the fees
Every Ghanaian resident permit application must be submitted directly to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), either online through the GIS portal or directly at the GIS regional office. You should also note that the application fees will depend on the type of permit you’re going for.
The application process may take 2-4 weeks, based on application volume and complexity. Fortunately, you can track your application status online or inquire at the GIS office.
