Getting into Ghana often requires a visa, which does not apply to visitors from certain countries. With that being said, it’s pretty common for foreigners to apply for a visa on arrival, especially if they need to travel immediately and can’t go through the process of getting a standard visa. If you’re looking to get a visa upon arrival in 2025, here are five important changes you need to know to help you prepare adequately.

Temporary non-pre-approval visa on arrival policy

It’s worth noting that Ghana waived the pre-approval requirement for visas on arrival from December 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025. This initiative was part of the ‘December in GH‘ campaign under the ‘Beyond the Return’ initiative, which allowed international travellers to get a visa upon arrival without the need for prior approval. The goal of this policy was to simplify entry procedures during the peak tourism season, encouraging visitors to experience Ghana’s rich cultural events and festivals.

Introduction of online visa application system

Since the pre-approval waiver is temporary, foreigners looking to visit Ghana after January 15th would have to go through the standard process of getting a visa on arrival. However, the government is also introducing an online visa application system to further streamline the process for travellers. This means that you would be able to apply for your visa before entering the country and avoid the tedious wait times at the entry points. This system will be operational at the end of January, so keep this in mind.

Visa-free entry for all African passport holders

In addition to making visa on arrival easier to get, Ghana is also opening its gate to citizens of all African countries by welcoming them into the country without any visa. This policy was implemented on January 6, 2025, making Ghana the fifth African country to implement such a policy, promoting regional integration and facilitating easier movement across the continent.

In conclusion…

Getting a Ghanaian visa on arrival is likely to become easier, thanks to the upcoming implementation of the online visa application system. However, you’ll still need to go through the pre-approval process before being granted entry into the country, as the waiver ended on January 15. Although the visa on arrival promises convenience, you’ll find it helpful to check the latest policies on the official Ghana Immigration Service website or consult with a Ghanaian embassy or consulate. This way, you can enjoy your visit without dealing with complications.
